John has 40+ years of riding and training experience and his passion for helping people understand horses continues today. Like many other good horsemen, he works with horses instinctual nature rather than against it. It’s important for riders / instructors to have thorough knowledge and understanding of horses to gain respect using control.
John Garvey loves horses and believes the horse to be a living and feeling decision making animal. He understands that proper horse training relies on making the wrong choice for the horse difficult and the right choice easy. As part of training riders, he pays close attention to body language and signals from the horse, which can often be overlooked.

John trained one of my horses, taught me to ride, and employed me as a riding instructor. Perhaps
only those who love horses and ride can know what it means to me. It’s a measurement of our relationship that when I moved 120 miles outside of the greater LA basin, I drove that once a week to his training facility to continue my lessons with him rather than find new trainer.

When I first started training with John, he struck me as very unusual for a horse trainer. In the horse business, most deals seem to be made at the expense of another horseman. I was eight years old taken riding lessons at another barn, had a bad experience and was prepared to hang up my boots for good. My mother had heard about John from a friend,
as was assured that John was a real horseman and would get me riding again. The idea was that I would take a few lessons, just enough to get my confidence back and that would be the end of my riding career. From the start, John was patient and taught me well and before I knew it, my two or three lessons turned into a daily activity, then a passion!
